NBA Draft Day Journal

Miami and Chicago with the biggest steals of the night. Justise Winslow was projected to go as early as the 4th pick and Bobby Portis was projected to go 15th. Instead they fell to 10th and 22nd, respectively. Winslow will fit in nicely in Miami for a team needing a young wing player but he may have to develop a better jump shot if he wants to play alongside D-Wade. Meanwhile Bobby Portis will be a nice replacement for Taj Gibson. Portis does some of everything. He can shoot, he can block shots, he can rebound. If Joakim Noah gets healthy these two will make for quite the frightening interior presence.

No love in New York. Knicks fans have every right to be apprehensive about drafting Kristaps Porzingis considering their history but Porzingis is going to end up a very good player. A 7’1 power forward with such a smooth stroke will bend defenses. Porzingis is also a hard worker and speaks fluent English. He won’t have some hard adjustment period like some European prospects. The one odd thing about this selection is that Porzingis is at least one season away from developing a more NBA ready body and the Knicks were in win now mode so I wonder what’s the strategy here? Perhaps after just missing out on Jahil Okafor they went with the best available prospect.

Times are changing. The NBA is changing and so are the players being picked in the draft. Devin Booker a few years ago would have been picked somewhere late in the first round but teams require more shooting nowadays as they love to stretch the floor and shoot 3’s. Booker ended up up as the 13th pick. Booker is a good player so this is not to speak ill of him but there was a day where teams would choose the skilled big men and defensive players before the shooters. Instead D’Angelo Russell was chosen over Jahil Okafor and Devin Booker over Rondae Hollis-Jefferson.

Mock drafts are pointless. Every year people put a lot of effort into creating these mock drafts trying to decide where everyone was going and they were more wrong than ever this year. Teams know the value of not telling other teams who they’re interested in.

76ers fans have to admit that Sam Hinkie has no plan. Philadelphia is simply acquiring assets without having the vision of what to do with them. After drafting Jahil Okafor, the 76ers now have three centers who can’t shoot. If Joel Embiid comes back healthy, do they just try to play without spacing? Do they play each man 16 minutes? There has to be a trade coming for this team after filling out roster spot with three top 10 picks and having no real players to start in the other four.

Did anyone see Kelly Oubre’s shoes?! Yes those are spikes.

LaMarcus Aldridge is probably gone. All reports coming out indicate Aldridge is leaving Portland and that will be a tough blow to the franchise but Portland didn’t sit around and mope under their cloudy skies. The Trailblazers went out and got two solid young big men in Mason Plumlee and Noah Vonleh. Why did Brooklyn and Charlotte give up on these guys so quick? Who knows but they will make their former teams pay.

What the hell is Charlotte doing? First they took on Spencer Hawes’ long deal and then they traded last year’s lottery pick for Nicolas Batum (who only has one year left on his contract). They needed shooting and they traded for a guy who had a horrible shooting season. Charlotte’s wing combo may now be the worst shooting duo in the league. Noah Vonleh still had plenty of potential and they barely played him and got rid of him so quick. Charlotte then went on to draft Frank Kaminsky. Frank The Tank will be a nice player but Charlotte seems to have a knack for drafting big men who don’t pan out. They were shopping Cody Zeller as well. I also don’t see where Kaminsky will fit in with the team having a similar player in Spencer Hawes on the roster along with Marvin Williams, Al Jefferson, and Cody Zeller. Are they not going to resign Bismack Biyombo now? Get it together MJ and find this team an identity.
